Possible warning signs that deserve medical or dental evaluation include:
A lump or thickened area inside the mouth
A sore or ulcer that does not heal
A persistent red or white patch
Unexplained bleeding
Pain or tenderness that doesn’t go away
Numbness or unusual sensation in part of the mouth
Difficulty chewing or swallowing
Difficulty moving the tongue or jaw
Persistent hoarseness or changes in the voice
A feeling that something is stuck in the throat
An unexplained lump in the neck
These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer. Many other conditions can produce similar signs.
🦷 Why Can a Lump Appear?
There are numerous possible explanations for a bump inside the mouth.
Sometimes it develops after accidentally biting the cheek, lip, or tongue. Repeated irritation from a sharp tooth, dental appliance, or poorly fitting denture can also cause a swollen or thickened area.
