I came to visit my elderly mother

NEXT PART — THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“Judge Thorne,” I said quietly, “this is Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance. I need an emergency protective order tonight.”

There was a pause on the other end.

“Are you with the victim now?”

“Yes.”

“Is she in immediate danger?”

I looked at my mother.

She was sitting on the closed toilet seat, wrapped tightly in a towel, her hands trembling.

“Yes,” I answered. “I believe she is.”

The judge didn’t ask me to explain everything over the phone.

“Don’t confront them. Get her somewhere safe. I’ll authorize an emergency order and contact the appropriate authorities.”

I hung up.

For the first time that day, my mother looked at me with something I hadn’t seen in her eyes since I arrived.

Hope.

“Will they know?” she whispered.

“Not if we do this carefully.”

I helped her get dressed in loose clothes and slipped her medical records, identification, and a few important documents into a small bag.

We waited until the house became quiet.

Then I helped her through the back door.

We had barely reached my car when a light suddenly came on upstairs.

“Where are you going?”

Julian stood in the doorway.

His expression changed when he saw the bag in my mother’s hand.

“Mom isn’t going anywhere.”

I stepped between him and her.

“She is now.”

Chloe appeared behind him.

“What did you do?”

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I held up my phone.

“The police are on their way.”

Julian laughed.

“You’re bluffing.”

“No,” I said. “I’m documenting everything.”

His smile disappeared.

Then Chloe noticed something else.

“What’s that on your phone?”

“Pictures.”

Her face went pale.

“The bruises. The rope marks. Everything Mom told me.”

Julian took one step toward me.

“Delete them.”

My mother suddenly spoke.

“No.”

It was the first time I’d heard her use that voice all day.

Julian froze.

My mother looked directly at him.

“You don’t control me anymore.”

Within minutes, flashing lights appeared outside the house.

Julian’s confidence vanished.

The officers separated everyone and immediately called for medical assistance for my mother.

One of them examined the marks around her wrists.

“How long has this been happening?”
