Have you ever looked down at your legs and noticed blue or purple veins that appear twisted, enlarged, or raised above the surface of your skin? You may have assumed they were simply a normal part of aging, but these changes can be a sign of varicose veins.

 

Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins become weak or stop working efficiently. Normally, these valves help keep blood moving upward toward the heart. When they don’t close properly, blood can flow backward and collect inside the veins. This increased pressure can gradually cause the veins to become enlarged, swollen, and twisted.
