My grandmother always had a batch of this simmering

3-Ingredient Buttered Sweet Peas

This simple side dish turns frozen sweet peas into a warm, tender, buttery favorite with just three ingredients. The peas simmer gently in chicken broth before being finished with butter, creating a glossy sauce that coats every bite.

Ingredients

– 3 cups frozen sweet peas

– 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

– ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth, or water

Instructions

1. Combine the Peas and Broth

Place the frozen sweet peas and chicken broth in a medium saucepan.

The broth should come just around the peas. It is perfectly fine if a few peas remain above the liquid.

2. Bring to a Simmer

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Stir occasionally as the peas thaw, separating any frozen clumps with your spoon.

3. Cook Until Tender

Once the mixture begins simmering, reduce the heat to low.

Cover the saucepan and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the peas are tender and bright green.

4. Reduce the Liquid

Remove the lid and continue cooking over low heat for another 3–5 minutes.

Most of the broth should evaporate, leaving the peas moist with a small amount of concentrated liquid in the bottom of the pan.

5. Add the Butter

Add the 4 tablespoons of butter.

Stir gently and continuously over low heat until the butter has completely melted and combines with the remaining broth to create a glossy, silky sauce that coats the peas.

Taste and add a small pinch of salt if desired.

6. Rest and Serve

Turn off the heat and let the peas sit on the warm burner for 2–3 minutes.

Give them one final gentle stir, then transfer them to a serving bowl.
