It left them with chills down their spines

When owners can no longer handle such animals, releasing them outdoors might seem like an easy solution.

But it can create serious problems.

The animal may struggle to survive, encounter people or pets, or prey on native wildlife. At the same time, an exotic predator can disrupt local ecosystems.

The Monmouth County SPCA specifically reminded exotic-pet owners that these animals should never simply be released into the wild.

What Happened to the Python?

Fortunately, the story did not end with the snake being left outside.

After being rescued, the python was placed in a secure enclosure and monitored by animal-care professionals.

It was later transferred to an experienced reptile handler with the appropriate permits and facilities.

Officials hoped that a suitable permanent home could be found if the original owner did not come forward.

The snake was reportedly in good enough condition to receive continued care, despite the unusual circumstances surrounding its discovery.

The Mystery of Its Previous Life

One of the biggest unanswered questions remains how the python got there in the first place.

The snake was clearly not a native New Jersey species.

It had somehow reached a residential backyard, found an opening beneath a shed, and settled there after consuming a large opossum.

For the homeowners, the discovery was shocking enough.

But the possibility that an exotic pet had been abandoned nearby made the situation even more unusual.

A Backyard Encounter No One Expected

Imagine stepping into your backyard expecting to water flowers and instead seeing an eight-foot python slowly moving near your shed.

That is exactly the kind of moment that can turn an ordinary afternoon into an unforgettable story.

Fortunately, the family did the right thing by contacting professionals rather than attempting to capture the snake themselves.

The rescue team was able to remove the python safely, examine it, and arrange appropriate care.

And the X-ray answered the question everyone had been asking since the snake was first discovered:

What was responsible for that enormous bulge in its belly?

The answer was a large opossum.

The Bigger Lesson

The incident is more than just a strange animal story.

It is also a reminder that exotic pets require serious responsibility.

Large reptiles are not ordinary household animals. They need appropriate enclosures, specialized care, secure housing, and owners who understand their long-term needs.

When an owner can no longer care for an exotic animal, surrendering it to a qualified rescue, shelter, or experienced handler is far safer than releasing it outdoors.

For the Freehold family, what began as a frightening discovery ended with the python safely removed and placed into professional care.

But the image of an enormous Burmese python hiding beneath a backyard shed — with an entire opossum revealed inside its swollen belly by an X-ray — is certainly a story they are unlikely to forget.
