If You Notice Your Legs Are Swollen, Don’t Ignore It – Here’s What It Could Mean

Swollen legs, ankles, or feet are a common health concern that can happen for many different reasons. In many cases, the cause is harmless, such as standing or sitting for long periods, hot weather, or minor injuries. However, persistent or unexplained swelling can sometimes be a sign that your body is trying to tell you something more serious.

Swelling may occur when excess fluid builds up in the tissues, a condition known as edema. This can be linked to poor circulation, vein problems, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, certain medications, or issues with the lymphatic system. In some cases, swelling may also be associated with infections or blood clots that require prompt medical attention.

Warning signs that deserve medical evaluation include swelling that appears suddenly, affects only one leg, is accompanied by severe pain, redness, warmth, shortness of breath, chest pain, or continues to worsen over time. These symptoms should never be ignored, as they may indicate a condition that requires urgent treatment.

Although some people worry that swollen legs automatically mean cancer, the reality is that cancer is only one of many possible causes, and swelling by itself is not enough to diagnose it. Most cases are related to other medical conditions, many of which can be treated successfully once the underlying cause is identified.
