Remembering Anthony Head, the Actor Behind One of Television’s Most Beloved Characters
The entertainment world has lost one of its most recognizable British actors.
Anthony Head, whose career stretched across more than four decades, became a familiar face to several generations of television viewers. Although he appeared in countless productions, many fans will forever remember him most fondly as Rupert Giles, the intelligent, reserved, and deeply loyal librarian and mentor from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Head died in 2026 at the age of 72, leaving behind a remarkable body of work across television, film, theater, radio, and music.
The role that made him unforgettable
When Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997, nobody could have known just how influential the series would become.
At the center of Buffy’s supernatural world was Rupert Giles, the British librarian who was far more than he initially appeared to be.
Giles was Buffy’s Watcher, responsible for training her, educating her about vampires and other supernatural creatures, and helping her understand the enormous responsibility placed on her shoulders.
Anthony Head brought something special to the character.

A career that began long before Buffy
Although many younger viewers discovered Anthony Head through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, his career had already been developing for decades.
Born in London in 1954, Head came from a family connected to the arts. His father was a documentary filmmaker, while his mother was an actress.
Anthony developed an interest in performing and eventually built a career in theater and musical productions.
Long before becoming Giles, he appeared on stage in productions including The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell, and Chess.
He also became widely recognized in Britain through a series of memorable coffee commercials with actress Sharon Maughan. The advertisements became a cultural phenomenon and made Head a familiar face to British television audiences.
But his biggest international breakthrough was still ahead of him.
Becoming Rupert Giles
When Head was cast in Buffy, he brought a very different energy to a show filled with teenagers, vampires, monsters, romance, comedy, and horror.
His British accent and theatrical presence immediately distinguished Giles from the younger characters around him.
