Anne Hathaway Revealed the Uncomfortable Advice She Received Early in Her Acting Career
Before Anne Hathaway became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses, she was a young performer trying to prove that she belonged in an industry where opportunities could be difficult to find.
Looking back on the early years of her career, Hathaway has spoken openly about some of the uncomfortable experiences she encountered as a young actress—and one particular casting practice left a lasting impression on her.
A Difficult Experience at the Beginning of Her Career
Hathaway began working professionally at a young age, and she quickly learned that auditions were not always as simple as reading lines and demonstrating acting ability.
In one experience she recalled, a casting process involved what was described as a “chemistry test.” The purpose was supposedly to determine whether two actors had the right chemistry to play a romantic couple on screen.
However, the way those tests were sometimes conducted made Hathaway uncomfortable.
She recalled being asked to kiss several male actors as part of the process. In one case, she said she was told there were approximately 10 men she would have to kiss during the audition.
Today, that sounds shocking to many people. But Hathaway explained that she was young and trying to establish herself in a highly competitive industry.

“I Was Told Not to Be Difficult”
One of the most disturbing aspects of her story was not simply the audition itself, but the pressure she felt to behave as though everything was perfectly normal.
Young actors often worry that saying no to an uncomfortable request could cause them to be labeled “difficult,” especially when they are just beginning their careers.
Hathaway has explained that she tried to approach the situation professionally even though she found the idea uncomfortable.
At that stage of her career, she wanted to work. She wanted people to believe in her talent, and she did not want to lose an opportunity because she had questioned a casting decision.
For a young performer with limited power in the industry, that kind of pressure could make it extremely difficult to establish personal boundaries.
Hollywood’s Approach Has Changed
Hathaway’s story also reflects how much the entertainment industry has changed.
For decades, physical intimacy between actors was sometimes handled informally during auditions and rehearsals. Romantic chemistry was often treated as something that needed to be tested through physical contact.
Today, productions increasingly use more structured and respectful approaches.
