Waking up every morning with sticky, irritated eyelids is a common problem that can have several different causes. During sleep, your eyes naturally produce tears, oils, and small amounts of mucus. These substances can collect along the eyelashes overnight, leaving the eyelids feeling sticky or crusty when you first wake up. While this is normal to some extent, persistent irritation may indicate an underlying eye condition that deserves attention.

One of the most common causes is blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelid margins. This condition occurs when the tiny oil glands near the base of the eyelashes become clogged or irritated. People with blepharitis often experience redness, itching, burning, crusts around the eyelashes, watery eyes, and a sensation that something is trapped inside the eye. Symptoms are usually most noticeable in the morning because debris accumulates while sleeping.

Dry eye syndrome is another possible cause. Even though the eyes may feel watery during the day, they can become excessively dry overnight. In response, the eyes may produce thicker mucus, making the eyelids feel sticky upon waking. Sleeping with a fan or air conditioner blowing directly on the face, spending long hours looking at digital screens, or certain medical conditions can contribute to dry eyes.

Allergies are also a frequent reason for irritated eyelids. Dust mites, pollen, pet hair, mold, or cosmetics can trigger inflammation around the eyes. Allergy-related symptoms often include itching, swelling, excessive tearing, redness, and sticky eyelids, especially after sleeping.
