If Your Private Parts Smell Fishy, It’s Something You Shouldn’t Ignore
A healthy vagina naturally has a mild scent that can vary throughout the menstrual cycle, after exercise, or following sexual activity. However, a persistent fishy odor is not considered normal and may indicate an underlying condition that should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
The Most Common Cause: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
The leading cause of a fishy vaginal odor is bacterial vaginosis (BV). This common condition develops when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted, allowing certain bacteria to overgrow. Although BV is not always classified as a sexually transmitted infection, sexual activity, douching, and changes in vaginal pH can increase the risk of developing it.
Common Symptoms of BV
– A strong fishy smell, often more noticeable after sex.
– Thin gray, white, or green vaginal discharge.
– Mild itching or irritation.
– Burning during urination.
– In some cases, no symptoms other than the odor.

Other Possible Causes
While BV is the most common reason for a fishy odor, other conditions can produce similar symptoms:
– Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite.
– A retained tampon or other foreign object.
– Less commonly, other vaginal infections or pelvic infections.
– Temporary changes in vaginal pH after intercourse may briefly affect odor, but a persistent smell should be checked.
