I stared at the note for several minutes before finding the courage to open it. My mother’s handwriting instantly brought tears to my eyes. She began by thanking me for every birthday, every holiday, and every small act of kindness I had ever shown her. Then she wrote something I never expected:
“My dear child, if you’re reading this, it means I’m no longer with you. Please don’t carry guilt in your heart. I knew you were trying to give your children the life you never had. I have always loved you, and I always will.”
My tears fell onto the paper as I continued reading. She explained that the little plant had been her favorite because my father had given it to her on their final wedding anniversary. After he passed away, caring for it made her feel close to him. That was why she refused to leave it behind.
The note ended with one final instruction:
“Now search deeper. My last gift is still waiting for you.”
My heart raced as I carefully emptied every handful of soil onto the kitchen table. At first, I found nothing but tangled roots. Then my fingers touched something solid. Hidden beneath the roots was a small metal box wrapped in plastic to protect it from moisture.

Inside the box was an old key, several faded photographs I had never seen before, and a sealed envelope with my name written across the front. There was also a small velvet pouch containing my grandmother’s wedding ring—a family heirloom I had believed was lost forever.
I opened the second letter with trembling hands. My mother explained that the key belonged to a safety deposit box she had rented decades earlier. She had kept it a secret because she wanted to make sure it would only be opened after she was gone.
