The Different Types of Headaches: What Your Pain May Be Telling You

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, but not all headaches are the same. The location and type of pain can often provide clues about the underlying cause.

1. Tension Headache

This is the most common type. It usually causes a dull, aching pain or a feeling of pressure around the forehead or the back of the head and neck. Stress, fatigue, poor posture, and lack of sleep are common triggers.

2. Migraine

Migraines often cause intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head. They may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or strong smells. Some people experience visual disturbances, known as an aura, before the headache begins.

3. Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches are extremely painful and usually occur around one eye. They often come in repeated attacks over days or weeks and may be accompanied by a watery eye, a runny nose, or redness on the affected side of the face.

4. Sinus Headache

This type is associated with inflamed or infected sinuses. It causes pressure and pain in the forehead, cheeks, around the eyes, or the bridge of the nose. The pain often becomes worse when bending forward.

5. Rebound Headache

Also called a medication-overuse headache, this type can occur when pain-relief medications are taken too frequently. Instead of relieving pain, overuse can actually cause headaches to return more often.

When to Seek Medical Help

Seek immediate medical attention if a headache:

Appears suddenly and is the worst headache you’ve ever experienced.

Follows a head injury.

Is accompanied by fever, confusion, weakness, vision changes, seizures, or difficulty speaking.

Continues to worsen or doesn’t improve with treatment.

Understanding the type of headache you’re experiencing can help you identify possible triggers and know when it’s time to seek professional medical care.
